The laboratory has the equipment for manufacturing and characterising technical carbon. The laboratory environment also acts as a high-standard research and learning environment for the needs of businesses and as a testing platform for new applications.

The laboratory offers an environment for the research and development of technical carbon of the environment, such as activated carbon and carbon foam. The laboratory has modern equipment for manufacturing biomass-based technical carbon with slow pyrolysis, as well as the equipment and expertise related to the characterisation of carbon. In the laboratory, businesses are supported by the strong theoretic, long-standing competence of the research staff of the University of Oulu / Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius.

In the research laboratory, carbon products can be manufactured and tailored in accordance with the requirements of the end product. Modern characterisation equipment enables analysis of micro and mesopore materials. It is also possible to test the properties of manufactured technical carbon products or those delivered by customers in the desired applications, e.g. as anode carbon in battery cells or as activated carbon in water treatment.

The laboratory environment has been developed for the research and development operations of universities and businesses. Research services related to the manufacture or characterisation of technical carbon is offered by the University of Oulu/Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius.
