Institute of Photonics: Research and expert services in optics and photonics
The Institute of Photonics is Finland’s largest photonics unit, mainly operating in the Joensuu Campus of the University of Eastern Finland. Photonics is a technology related to the utilisation of light, with applications in almost every social and industrial sector.
Cleanrooms and up-to-date equipment serve corporate cooperation, research activities and photonics training. Our key laboratories are
- optics 3D printing laboratory
- optical laboratories for the manufacture, testing and measurement of micro and nano optics
- manufacturing laboratory for optical membranes, cleanrooms
- graphene manufacturing laboratory
- Sm4rtLab
- colour laboratory
- spectronomics laboratory
- optical materials laboratories.
Various technologies for 3D printing of plastic optical components are developed in the 3D printing laboratory. The optical laboratories are equipped with a number of laser light sources from femtosecond pulse lasers to near infrared fibre laser technology. The key technologies of the cleanrooms are electron beam lithography, nanoimprinting, micro and nanolithography, and the manufacturing methods of optical membranes. In the graphene manufacturing laboratory, it is possible to manufacture graphene and various artificial diamond structures. Sm4rtLab is a new remotely used concept for research and teaching, which can also be utilised with modern VR&AR technologies. The colour laboratory is equipped with various spectrum and hyperspectrum cameras. The spectronomics laboratory has modern imaging methods and optical measuring methods for plants. The optical materials laboratory has chemical equipment for the manufacture and testing of materials.
The Institute of Photonics has substantial cooperation with industry either through various joint projects or direct contract research, in which case for outsiders the services and equipment are subject to a fee in accordance with UEF price list. Cooperation varies from individual commissions (such as optics design, manufacture, measurement) for the R&D projects of various financing bodies (such as the Academy of Finland, Business Finland, the European Commission), theses carried out within industry, exchange of scientists, and direct contract research for the needs of industry. The Institute of Photonics also has ready projects to serve the needs of enterprises, such as the ACTPHAST concepts.
The Institute of Photonics is part of the nationwide Academy of Finland Flagship for Photonics Research and Innovation (PREIN).
